Nomi Fabrics, known for luxurious class design styling on silk, velvet, and linen, introduces a new collection of woven outdoor fabrics for both indoor and outdoor use. Durable jacquards, stripes, and solids are available in a wide spectrum of exquisite colors and new retro-modern inspired designs. The collection includes proprietary printed metallic finishes and patterns used in combination with chenille and other opulent textures. Woven from 100% solution dyed acrylic fibers, these fabrics have lasting color and are treated with a soil and stain-resistant finish, shielding them from mildew, rot, and atmospheric conditions.

Franklin takes fabrics from wearable to air-able
Nomi Franklin’s hand-painted fabrics have been recognized by designers across the country since the 1980s. One of the first artists to produce “wearable art” in the 1970s, the graduate of College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland worked exclusively for Obiko in San Francisco and boutiques in Beverly Hills. Franklin began Nomi’s Fabrics when she became interested in interior design.

She was a leader in developing textile art, basing many of her designs on European tradition, using strong golden colors and often absorbing Asian and Mideastern patterns.

After 20 years of overseeing the painstaking work of painting silks, linens and velvets by hand, Franklin met the representative of an American mill who offered to transfer her designs into a solution-dyed acrylic fabric for outdoor use. She was thrilled. It meant less work and a chance to expand her business. “I could be creative without getting bogged down,” she said.

With its new Outdoor Line, Nomi’s Fabrics offers a material durable enough to grace fine teak or metal patio furniture or go the distance on furniture destined for rough use. “It’s going to last so much longer than a traditional indoor fabric. It’s bomb-proof,” Franklin said. “You could put bleach on it and the color doesn’t lift. It’s fabulous for high-traffic rooms where there are children playing or animals. You can live with high-style fabrics and you don’t have to worry about them being destroyed.” Franklin created some new designs in chenille, specifically for the outdoor line, including fleur, rain, mobia and jazz (shown on pillows at right), at prices ranging from $115 to $148 a yard.

Her jacquard designs, including Taj (shown left), are less costly at $65 to $78 a yard. She also will replicate the designs (examples shown above left) of her hand-painted silk and velvets onto an acrylic canvas for the outdoors for $70 to $103 a yard.
